California Divorce Law – No Fault State

Although a couple wishing to divorce does not need to meet any legal grounds, they must meet certain residency requirements.  To be granted divorce in California, the couple must have lived in California for at least six months.  Furthermore, the couple must have resided in the county in which they wish to file for divorce for at least three months. Lastly, the state requires a six-month waiting period after the divorce petition has been filed before the court will finalize a divorce.
